Today when a young adult is thinking of travelling abroad for University or college studies, Latvia is an undeniably good option: a country in the northern-eastern Europe, institutions of academic excellence dating back several centuries, a possibility to study in different languages at affordable costs, high quality cultural life, and vivid multilingual student community.
Latvia has a long history in education, science and research and its higher education has always been immensely diverse. There are a lot of higher education establishments which vary from classical, comprehensive universities to specialised practice-focused professional colleges and business schools. Between them they offer a wide variety of study programmes of high academic standard. The range of study opportunities covers undergraduate degree courses for beginners as well as postgraduate programmes for advanced students and doctoral researchers. International students are admitted at all academic levels, provided that their existing qualifications are recognised by the establishment concerned.
Complementary services are offered to support international students in achieving their academic goals: advice, tutorials, insurance, housing and others. International students, of course, get the maximum assistance at the place of their studies to adjust to the new academic environment, to make studies abroad an enjoyable academic challenge for them. This support is especially important for the students in the so-called adaptation period, both from the point of view of their studies and for developing a real international community from the students coming from very different countries and interested in different areas of studies.
Latvia offers international Bachelor-Master-PhD degrees. After successful completion of the programmes students are awarded degrees or diplomas that are officially recognised by the relevant authorities in European Union and accepted internationally. Bachelor''''s degrees are awarded after the completion of undergraduate studies, which last 3 or 4 years. Master''s degrees are offered after completion of graduate studies, which last 1-2 years. PhD studies take normally 4 years and consist of conducting independent research and writing a dissertation.
Latvian tuition fees are relatively low. Tuition fees for degree programmes and courses are as a rule lower than in other countries. Students benefits from excellent study and research opportunities paying relatively low tuition fees.
